Christmas 2018

The last day of term is always a much anticipated and enjoyable day for students and staff at WHSG.

This year our end of term assembly celebrated the true meaning of Christmas and was also a celebration of the many achievements of the students, including congratulations to Miss Blandford's form, 7.5, for winning the best decorated form room!

We welcomed the new Senior Team with Mayowa Osadiya as Head Girl and Anthony Badura as Head Boy and Rosie Bridgewater, Rosie Duenas, Phoebe Eastwell, Rumer Heightington, Lexie Lawrence, Martha Roche and Tatenda Mwariwangu as Deputy Head Girls and Aaron Chong, Xavier Cleofe and Raphael Parascandolo as Deputy Head Boys.

Congratulations were given to the STEM Engineering Club team that have made it to the UK Big Bang Finals in Birmingham next March. Well done Grace Fallows, Aimee Cornish, Louise Townsend and Laura Harris.

Well done to the UKMT Senior Maths Challengers, Matt Lewis, Liam Ayers, Adam Bowyer and Izzy Moran, coming in joint 6th! Liam came in Best in School and Best in Year (13). Adam came in Best in Year (12) and Liam, Mat and Adam were all awarded a Gold certificate for the challenge and have made it through to the next round!

The Year 10 'Shining Star' Award went to Evie Collins for her success, not only in the classroom, but for achievements outside of the classroom.

'Shining Stars' are chosen for things such as running extra-curricular clubs, supporting younger students to raising money for charity and volunteering. Evie was one of 85 commended Foyle Young Poets of the Year 2018 from nearly 6000 entrants and 11000 poems this year from across the world!

It was wonderful to learn that Charity Week, held earlier this term, raised a fantastic £8691.46. The money was raised for the chosen charities: Meningitis Now, Alopecia UK and Southend Toy Library. Thank you to everyone that took part and donated.

The ABC Buddies Christmas Bazaar also raised a wonderful amount for Childline. Various stalls, a raffle and Santa's Grotto raised £1150! Mr. Jone's class 10pd5 raised the most- a whopping £265.59! The stall that raised the most was the Gingerbread Raffle- well done to Louise Townsend, Grace Fallows and Jessica Clarke for raising £82.42!

Special recognition was given to Sekemi Bamidele-Olomo for her hard work and commitment to the Jack Petchey Award Scheme.

The Library also announced the winner of the first Westcliff Book Award 2018 as 'The Hate You Give' by Angie Thomas!

Library competition winners were announced as Lily Ann Sharp for 'Best Book Reveiw', Zoe Tella for 'Best Alternative Ending' and Purnota Pushpita for 'Best Alternative Cover'. Freda Bulem was this term's 'Catch Me Reading' winner. All winners received a £10 Amazon gift voucher.

House Championship Results for this term were announced:

Sixth Form tug of War 1st place to Madeville.

House Cross Country Year Results: Year 7 Bourchier, Year 8 Bourchier, Year 9 Bohun. Overall Winners were Bourchier.

House Charity Week shows winner was Bourchier.

House Sport (Autumn term only) overall winner was Devereux.

House Art Cup for year 7-8 winner was Lakshmi Vermulapalli- Bourchier. Year 9-11 winner was Erin Bushell- Deveraux. Year 12-13 winner was gabrielle Adedeji- Bourchier. Special Award for Originality went to Lucinda Hasting- Bohun. 1st place to Bourchier. Congratulation to Lucind, who's design became the School Christmas card!

It was a wonderful celebration of achievement, topped with a loud and enthusiastic rendition of 'All I Want for Christmas'.
