Netball World Cup

18th July 2019

In the early hours of Monday morning, 50 pupils from years 7-11 along with the PE department started their journey to Liverpool for a once in a lifetime opportunity to be part of the Netball World Cup. On arrival at the Exhibition Centre we met the other schools who were also taking part in the day and the girls were split into different teams to represent some of the countries competing in the competition. Our pupils were in South Africa, Australia and Malawi for their morning activities, which included a shooting masterclass with Vitality Roses Sasha & Kadeen Corbin; a specialist defensive coaching session with Kathryn Ratnapala, Head Coach at Saracens Mavericks; a team building and communication session with the British Army; a Media Session with Team Bath; and a netball skills competition. The girls were being watched throughout the morning, scoring points which contributed towards an Award Ceremony at the end of the day. Team South Africa were the highest scorers in the skills session, scoring the highest in the media session, the team building session and the skills session, coming away with three gold medals each! A fantastic achievement for them and proud moment for the school. The girls were also taught a dance by the Corbin sisters and a chant that we would use to support England when they faced Jamaica later.

It was then time to head over to the arena for the main event: England vs Jamaica. It was billed to be an excellent game and a difficult one for England who are currently ranked 3rd in the world rankings against Jamaica who are currently ranked 2nd. Inside the atmosphere was electric as we waited for the game to start. England took a lead in the first quarter, although Jamaica started to close the gap in the second quarter. With a good half time talk and the motivation from the cheering crowd, England went from strength to strength, pulling away from the Jamaicans. Westcliff showed their support for the England Roses, cheering and performing the chant that they had learned earlier in the day. The final score was 56-48 to England. It was incredible for us to be there and be part of this amazing experience. There was just time for us to watch a very closely fought game between Trinidad and Tobago vs Uganda before heading home. You can hear the Westcliff girls performing the England chant during the game with Sasha and Kadeen Corbin, as this week we will be featured on the Vitality Roses’ podcast ‘Netballers’!
